The Pool Party

Last Saturday, we were thrilled to host "The Pool Party," a summer event co-hosted with Rebel Port Club marking the grand reopening of our summer garden. With the support of fantastic brands like Two Zero, Imago, Melissa, and 38 Graus, the evening turned into a celebration filled with style, music, and joy.

As guests arrived, they were welcomed into our summer garden, where every detail was carefully curated to create a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. The decor blended summer colors with chic elegance, perfectly setting the stage for the evening.


The music kept everyone in high spirits. Our DJs, Francisco Melo and Jaylo Pez, curated a playlist that seamlessly got everyone just in the right mood. 

No pool party is complete without delicious food and refreshing drinks, and we made sure our guests were treated to themed snacks by Eleven Lab that complemented the evening’s ambiance.
Rebel Port Club took on the ultimate job of providing drinks that kept everyone cool and refreshed.

The success of "The Pool Party" has set the tone for a fantastic summer season in our newly reopened garden. We're excited to continue hosting events that bring people together and create lasting memories.

Shoevenir Launch Event

Last Saturday, April 13th, the footwear brand inspired by places launched its new sandal collection at maranathahouston in Rīga. At this public event, the brand unveiled its 6 new sandal models: Rīga, Lisbon, Algarve, Madeira, Azores, and Dubai. Attendees enjoyed a DJ set by Miguel Nery, had the opportunity to try on the sandals, chat with the Shoevenir team, and even design their own Shoevenir colorway, which might materialize in the future.

Founded in 2021 in Rīga, this startup, renowned for its sneakers featuring insoles illustrated by artists, chose this sandal collection to further highlight Portuguese regions and beyond.

Consistent with previous productions, all done domestically, this new design is crafted solely from vegan and naturally sourced materials. The upper is a blend of water-resistant synthetic fibers, while the sole combines cork with an EVA base for optimal comfort.

Initially launched through crowdfunding, the project now boasts a presence in 12 physical stores across Portugal, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates, catering to customers from over 30 different nationalities. The brand's future plans include introducing new models inspired by various regions and adding two more European capitals to the current Shoevenir lineup later this year.

You know, one of the coolest skills you can have in your back pocket is being a cocktail master. Imagine this: you're gearing up to host a killer dinner party, and you want to leave your guests in awe with some top-notch drinks. Well, that's where mastering the art of mixology comes into play. The Rebel Port club had the idea to bring in the cocktail guru, Iolanda Lourinha as she took us on a laid-back tour of the whole cocktail-making process.

As we wrapped up the night, our cocktails left us  stoked, and every guest scored a surprising gift bag, courtesy of the Rebel Port Club. Inside those, we found everything necessary to conquer the world of cocktail crafting.
By the end of it, our minds buzzed with electrifying inspiration for our upcoming cocktail parties and we couldn't resist the urge to share some of them with you:
Two cocktail recipes for your next happy hour:

Port's Tonic

Ingredients:

- Ice

- Graham's Blend N. 5

- Tonic water

- Lemon

- Mint

- Sakura Syrup


In a glass with ice, add 1/2 of Graham's Blend No. 5 and 1/2 of tonic water. Next, garnish it with a slice of lemon and mint. If you're feeling adventurous, add 5 ml of Sakura syrup.


12 Fizz

Ingredients:

- Ice

- Graham's Blend N. 12

- Rosé sparkling wine

- Raspberry syrup

- Freshly squeezed lemon juice

To set the scene, we hosted an out-of-this-world event with the theme of a circus, where guests could unleash their inner child while being dazzled by jugglers and mystified by magicians. And, just when you thought the fun couldn't get any better - the popcorn stand completed the entire carnival aesthetic!

Crafted through an enchanting dance of spirits, classic Port wine, and our bartender's magical finesse, these three concoctions will have you asking for the next one. Rebel Port Club presented three stellar cocktails that'll waltz on your taste buds like never before, with Port wine twirling in the spotlight! It's a flavor fiesta you won't forget in a million sips.

On July 24th, at LOT, we had sustainable superheroes dropping knowledge on how to grow brands, and had a blast brainstorming ways to conquer the internet with our planet-loving brands.

We held our epic seminar in our exterior garden, amidst nature's VIPs, and it was the perfect spot to talk about how to grow a sustainable brand in the digital era. The discussion was hosted by Jade, the founder of The Mindful Step - a project born to promote responsible consumerism, production, and lifestyle.

Our panel of successful social media brands featured three inspiring speakers. Helena Antónia, founder of Vintage for a Cause, shared her journey as an upcycled fashion brand that promotes a circular economy and social commitment. Eunice Maia, the creator of Maria Granel, spoke about zero waste and her bio grocery shop that sells everything in bulk. Lastly, the sustainable brand Guaja, founded by a team of sisters and their mother, who shared valuable insights on building a brand from zero to hero. As part of the experience, a delightful beverage of Aquela Kombucha was served alongside it all.

By the end of it, our minds were electrified with inspiration and new ideas on how to skyrocket our personal projects, and we hope this will be an everlasting event.

On May 6th, in celebration of the epic collaboration between Algori and Cubu, everyone came together at LOT to have some fun and show off their mini-golf skills.

The focal point of the event was centered around the golf aesthetic, which permeated the entire gathering. The atmosphere was lively and electric, and the mini golf tracks  captured the attention and imagination of all attendees. 


Adding to the enjoyment of the party, Eleven Lab ensured that the catering was top-notch, providing delicious sangria and vibrant finger foods to everyone present. The beautiful weather added to the already festive atmosphere, making it a perfect evening to enjoy the outdoors.


All in all, the event turned out to be an enjoyable and memorable occasion, as the combination of the golf aesthetic, fun activities, and delectable food and drink made it a true celebration. The sunny backyard of LOT served as the perfect backdrop for this gathering.

The inspiration for the conception of this collaboration was rooted in the nostalgic spirit of the 90s. Embracing their retro aesthetic, Cubu went for an off-white 100% cotton set that showcases the exclusive logo of the collab, which is a fusion of Algori's and Cubu's trademarks.

On March 17th, we organized a small gathering at LOT, where we hosted a Drag Bingo Show in collaboration with Que Se Foda, the most eccentric wine brand you will ever cross.

Christel Mett's bubbly persona, coupled with DJ Lil Bukkake's lively energy, fired up an amazing evening of bingo. Tables were arranged in the outdoor area of LOT for the grand game night. While the Eleven Lab was distributing small appetizers, the undeniable highlight of the night was the wine from Que Se Foda - a Portuguese wine brand that boldly defies convention with its dynamic and daring approach, leaving no one indifferent.

I absolutely love the home feeling that the Adega São Nicolau gives me every time I visit it with all the different smells and tasteful dishes. This is the perfect spot for every occasion. The menu is full of great choices such as chicken bordelaise, octopus fillets with rice or the perfect appetizer, cod cakes. The desserts are homemade and the outdoor tables are disposed to strategically face the Douro river.

Hi! First off, introductions are in order: What is your name and what is your role?

I am Dennis de Vries and I work as a Creative Director for Next Memory.


All stories have a starting point: where's yours? What inspired Next Memory?

We opened SKINLIFE because there were no International niche brands in Latvia But then, over the years, we noticed that clients were entering SKINLIFE and asking for Portuguese brands, and there were also not many. That's pretty much how Next Memory was born. I have always attached a great sense of memories and emotions to smells, so for me, it was imperative to use that word, memories, because fragrances are all about that, to create new memories.


What are the values that drive the brand?

Freedom of creation, Handmade and Heart-Driven approach.

How do you see your brand in the world? What impact do you think it brings?

It's all about memory. We want people to know how to use their strong noses, which can do so much for them on a daily basis. We try to create gimmicks that will trigger people to use the nose differently.


What makes Next Memory different? What makes it a must have?

We feel very lucky — maybe it was meant to be, but creating Next Memory based on our love for Portugal, and then we found a gorgeous space that belonged to a J. J. Fernandes pharmacy… Well, it feels like we were meant to create not just another brand, but an experience. Next Memory is a luxurious niche brand, that embosses all the tradition and Portuguese knowledge. We don't sell just products, we offer olfatory memories in a bottle.



How does your creative process start? What shapes your product development?

Many years working in this sector were creating projects and ideas that were kept in a notebook to be brought to the world when the moment was right. A trip or just a visit to a church 100 meters from our atelier brings a wonderful story that deserves to be celebrated. Portugal has a rich, unique and unrepeatable history.


Is there something you do/know now that you wish you did/knew from the get-go?

With our brand, we try to create fragrances where you open the way for your own "next memory". So, in the future, someone will say, "this fragrance reminds me of my grandmother because she used Pink Lemon over Orange or a fragrance that speaks to you. That's the main idea behind the brand. It's also inspired by Latvia Our travels around Portugal over the last 12 years are an inspiration; so much nature, the city's spirit, and the people's freedom. We wanted to capture that into the fragrances.


How has maranathahouston played into your growth as a brand?

Rīga has always been a desired market to Next Memory, since it started, but we needed a good partner that knows the market and shares the same philosophy. LOT was the perfect match!

"People we love" is a column where we interview artists that we love, and get an exclusive sneak peek at them, their art, and their view on the world. In this installment, we meet Alex Proba, a well established visual artist that has worked with brands such as Louis Vuitton.

From a European artist based in The United States, what are, in your perspective, the main differences in the art industry between Europe vs. America?

I’ve moved to the USA almost 12 years ago now after coming from studying in the Netherlands (Design Academy Eindhoven) and I was actually very clueless about contemporary American design and what it means. I’ve learned that and experienced that American design takes itself less seriously than European design (or the design I grew up with) and lets you be a bit more playful and have a wink.


As an artist who has worked with some big brands such as Louis Vuitton and Google, how is the creative process of working with these household names? Is it intimidating?

Honestly, not really, because the worst thing that can happen is to fail and failing is a form of learning and not maligning the same errors again. Without failing, you can’t grow – it makes you better and stronger. So yes, I try to approach every project the same way, no matter how small or big. 


Some of these big brands, for example, Louis Vuitton, have very well-defined traits that are obvious to the customer. Do you sometimes feel pressured to adapt your art to a certain brand?  

I don't, as I don't adapt my art to a brand. I am always true to my art and design language and beliefs. I truly think if a brand approaches me, they approach me for my work and not as an extension of theirs. I am pretty clear and upfront about it. It may be my nature of being German. :) For me, it is the same as purchasing an art piece in a gallery.


Your work is an absolute mastery of color and shapes. Have you always felt comfortable mixing this many colors and shapes, or was it something you grew into with time as you developed your artistic style?

That is a great question and I’ve been asked that a lot, but I honestly think it is trial and error and, most of the time, a natural inclination for me to choose one color or pattern over another and I often do not overthink it. I trust my gut and 99% of the time, I go with the first chosen pattern or color. 


The times that I actually question myself and go back and change color and patterns in my designs is when the design actually fails. I apply spatial thinking and knowledge when translating a design from one medium to another —there are certain things I’ve learned through time what to do and not to do, but all in all, it really comes naturally to me. I know it sounds crazy, but I think some people are just good at math and some are not. I am definitely not, but I think I am alright when it comes to color. :)


I am, first and foremost, a visual designer/artist and all my creations are supposed to evoke an emotion. My work is a celebration of color and pattern, which I would see as a positive stimulation of the senses.

That said, I do try to not be inspired by other visuals than what the every day gives us. It can be sound, smells as well as memories.


Sometimes all I need is a phone call with my grandmother to get my creative flow going. There is no process that I use, to be honest, I am a maker at heart, and when I create, I’m extremely happy. I try to create every single day, even if it’s only sketches of my ideas, at least it’s something. Sometimes there are moments where I use my creativity as personal therapy, sometimes when I am stuck with a project or an assignment, I try to switch gears and create something off-topic for a little while. A process would break me.



In regard to your partnership with Dulis, was this your first time venturing into the realm of footwear? 

Yes, with the first collaboration – even though I worked for Nike for a couple of years, I never got to make a shoe.


What was the main inspiration for this project?

Mainly I wanted to stay true to my artwork and have them be super colorful and unexpected with layer differences in material and height. A shoe that is more a sculpture then a shoe but then again just a shoe to wear and have fun with (and be a kid and not treat it like precious and jump into the mud or puddles).


Considering your amazing repertoire of partnerships, why did you choose to work with a more lowkey brand like Dulis?

I love anything handmade and for kids and Dulis' collections and materials are just beautiful.


Does the creative process of children inspire your own art? Is it a learning experience for both sides?

I wish I could think like a kid when making my designs as they just do and not overthink and the outcomes are better than mine ;). It's so freeing to watch that and see the excitement when they do it.

The Christmas time is a never-ending season for yummi food. 

We picked some of our favorite festive recipes to share with our loved ones.


Vegan blueberry and lime pie


Ingredients

For the base:
-2 cups of pitted dates;
-1 ½ cups of almond flour;
-3 tablespoons of coconut oil;
-Salt flower.

For the Filling:
-400gr of cashews (hydrated for at least 4 to 5 hours);
-1 can of coconut milk;
-1 cup shredded dry coconut;
-4 limes (zest and juice);
-1/2 glass of maple syrup;
-2 tablespoons of melted coconut oil;
-1 cup of frozen blueberries;
-2 tablespoons of coconut sugar;

Base preparation:
Grind all the ingredients in the processor until obtaining a homogeneous mixture.
Spread the mixture in a tart pan, pressing until it is very compact.
(Set aside).

Filling preparation:
Combine all ingredients except for the blueberries and coconut sugar in a food processor, blending well until obtaining a smooth and homogeneous mixture.
Remove 2/3 of the mixture into a bowl and set aside.
Add the blueberries and coconut sugar to the rest of the cream and process again, mixing well.
With the base already placed in the tart pan, add the cream with the blueberries and smooth it out until a leveled layer is obtained. Then add the other white cream and level again.
Place the pie in the freezer for two hours. Remove and decorate as you like, with cocoa nibs, dry fruit crisps, among others.
Whenever you want to serve, remove the desired portion and finish with lime zest.

Madeira's Honey Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 750 grams flour
  • 560 grams sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 250 grams sugarcane honey
  • 35 grams ground cinnamon
  • 5 grams ground cloves

  • 15 grams ground nutmeg
  • 25 grams Baking Soda
  • Zest of 1/2 lemon
  • 95 grams Butter
  • 95 grams pork fat or butter
  • Almonds for a finishing touch

Mix all the ingredients (except the eggs and sugar cane sugar).
Once mixed, make a hole in the middle and add the eggs and the molasses / sugar cane sugar.
Knead the down again and again until it becomes smooth and no longer sticks to the bowl.
Leave in the fridge for 24 hours.
Roll the dough into balls.
Place the balls onto trays with non-stick paper.
Possible addition: place an almond on the cookie ball as a finishing touch
Leave in the oven at 150ºC for 30 minutes.
Store in a sealed container in a dry place. Can be stored for up to 6 months without losing quality.

"Leite Creme" - Portuguese Egg Custard

Ingredients

  • 1 liter of milk
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 200g sugar

  • 40g cornstarch
  • Peel of 1 lemon
  • Brown sugar, for sprinkling

In a saucepan, boil the milk with the cinnamon stick and lemon peel.
Slightly beat the sugar with the egg yolks and cornstarch.
When the milk begins to boil, remove the cinnamon and lemon and slowly add to the egg mixture, stirring constantly.
Put the mixture back in the pan where the milk was boiled and give it a mix with the blender to break up any cornstarch lumps.
Leave it on low heat until it thickens, stirring constantly.
Place it on a platter and burn to taste - just sprinkle with sugar and burn with a burner.

"Escangalhado" of potato and cod fish

Ingredientes

  • Potatoes
  • Cod Fish
  • Blond Leaf
  • Onions

  • Salt
  • Garlic
  • Cumin
  • Sprouts

  • Potatoes
  • Cod Fish
  • Blond Leaf
  • Onions
  • Salt
  • Garlic
  • Cumin
  • Sprouts

Cook some potatoes with cod, a blond leaf, salt and garlic. When it's all cooked, remove the blond leaf and turn the potatoes into puree and mix the cod already cooked and shredded. Braise the onions, another blond lead, 3 garlic cloves and cumins to your taste. Mix the shredded cod and puree already made into this braise and let it cook while mixing.

On a different pan cook the sprouts in water and when it's done, strain the water and braise them with 1 onion, 1 blond leaf and 3 garlic cloves. When it's tasty, serve the sprouts and the potato pure and cod mix and enjoy!

"Arroz Doce" - Sweet Rice Pudding

Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole milk (scalding)
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 cup rice (preferably Carolina short grain)
  • Powdered Cinnamon

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 slices of lemon zest
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cinnamon stick

Start by bringing water, a cinnamon stick, and lemon peel to a boil in a sizable, sturdy saucepan.
Once boiling, introduce the rice and continue cooking on medium heat until all the water evaporates.
Pour in the hot milk and let it simmer for a minimum of 25 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally.
Add sugar, stir, and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Turn off the heat.
While the mixture is cooling slightly, beat the egg yolks in a separate bowl.
Temper the eggs by gradually adding a few tablespoons of the rice mixture, mixing thoroughly.
Remove the saucepan from heat, and blend in the remaining eggs, ensuring the rice is not actively boiling. Simmer for approximately 1 minute.
Remove the lemon peel and cinnamon stick from the mixture.
Transfer the contents to a large serving platter or individual dishes.
Allow the dish to cool, then garnish with powdered cinnamon.
